Playing is vital to the design process at Singaplural 2018

  • March 13, 2018 - Written by Angel Yulo

The theme of “A State in Play” looks to shift the concept of play from something that is frivolous to a process quintessential for design.

Innovation happens most in this liberated atmosphere for trial-and-error. Singaplural 2018 recalls what Albert Einstein once said about play—

it is the highest form of research. How many of us understood more physics and anatomy in the playground than in the classroom?

Four Singapore Design Week 2018 Events To Attend

  • March 6, 2018

“Ultimately, we hope our various efforts will help Singaporeans recognise the value of design and how our lives can be made better, by design.

Singapore Design Week is a celebration of the many expressions of designs and a time when everyone,”

said Agnes Kwek, executive director of the Design Singapore Council (Dsg), which organises SDW.

Twist, Bend, Play: SingaPlural 2018 Opens At The National Design Centre

  • March 6, 2018 - Written by Narelle Yabuka

“I asked the designers to look at setting up an experiment rather than come up with a finished product.

So for example, Studio Dam show their entire process [of experimenting with ceramic]. I told them,

‘You don’t need to feel pressured to come up with a lamp.’ It’s about showing the experimental process behind it.

It was quite refreshing for a lot of the designers. I wanted this whole idea of play as experimentation.

I feel that even if you fail at something, you learn from it.”

Among its principals objectives is to take design to the masses, and to this end organizer DesignSingapore Council (Dsg)

is working with government agencies and local creative businesses to bring SDW beyond the NDC. District Activations involving

National Heritage Board (NHB), HJGHER and LOPELAB, will bring installations and activities to Bras Basah, Bugis, Holland Village

and Tanjong Pagar, while design trails in places of architectural and heritage value, named The City Ramble Design Trails,

will be set up by Shophouse & Co. Another highlight is long-standing trade show, the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS).
